If you have not already been, Fiji should be a must-visit destination on anyone’s travel list! Here is our first-hand account of a recent trip to the Yasawa Islands.
It was nice to escape to a tropical paradise – with every visitor to the island nation being serenaded by traditional Fijian music, right from the time they get off the plane at the Nadi airport.
The two most common holiday destinations in Fiji for Aussies are the Coral Coast (approximately an hour and a half to two hour transfer each way) or Denarau, which is an island only about 20 minutes away from the airport. Both have some fantastic 5 star resorts and are very family-friendly. For honeymooners and couples looking for a break from being around the kids, there are plenty of 4 and 5 star resorts located on more remote islands – some only accessible by sea plane.
On this particular trip, the adventurer in me wanted to go out and explore a little bit, so I purchased a hop on/hop off island explorer ticket, which gave me the freedom to take a ferry (called the Yasawa Flyer) to some of the furthermost islands, which were upwards of two to two and a half hours away).
Because these islands are all essentially self-contained infrastructures in themselves, many of them require you to pre-pay your meal plan on arrival. However, they are quite affordable, and offer options for vegetarians for all meals.
There are plenty of daytime activities, including local arts and crafts, sea kayaking, volleyball and even deep sea fishing. Even though I had no previous experience, I was given the privilege of trying out the latter, and I managed to catch my first big fish – which I’m told became lunch for everyone on the island (both visitors and staff) for the next 3 days.
I could go on and on about how great of an experience that a Fijian holiday is – including taking part in a traditional Kava ceremony, but I will leave it with the reader to try it out on their own.
